Payroll Administrator

Salary: Up to £35,000
Location: Coventry
Working Pattern: Office-based
Hours: 37 hours per week
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
Team: 5 within Payroll

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity for an experienced payroll professional to join an established accountancy practice, managing their own portfolio of approximately 100 client payrolls.

This role is about more than simply processing payroll. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop towards a more Payroll Adviser-focused position, building strong client relationships, providing guidance and taking greater ownership of the service provided.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of approximately 100 client payrolls from start to finish.
• Process starters, leavers, contractual changes, deductions, pensions and statutory payments.
• Act as a key point of contact for clients, HMRC and internal colleagues.
• Build trusted client relationships and provide clear payroll guidance.
• Complete payroll checks and audits to maintain accuracy and compliance.
• Support the Senior Payroll Manager with workload planning and team activity.
• Assist with the training and development of junior payroll colleagues.
• Keep client records, payroll documentation and system information accurate and up to date.
• Stay informed of changes to UK payroll legislation and communicate these effectively to clients.
• Embrace new technology and automation to improve payroll processes and client service.

Ideal Candidate

• Strong payroll bureau or accountancy practice experience is essential.
• Experience managing a high-volume portfolio of multiple client payrolls.
• Strong technical knowledge of PAYE, statutory deductions, pensions, auto-enrolment and benefits.
• Confident and professional when communicating directly with clients.
• Commercially aware, solutions-focused and interested in developing beyond traditional payroll processing.
• Previous experience supporting or mentoring junior team members would be advantageous.
• Strong organisation and ability to manage multiple competing deadlines.
• STAR experience would be beneficial, with Staffology experience particularly advantageous due to an upcoming system migration.
• Strong Excel skills and a willingness to embrace new payroll technology.
